EIDU was founded in 2015, driven by the belief that every child deserves access to quality education. Ever since, our journey has been marked by significant milestones.
Our Journey
One Step at a Time
Our journey began with a simple belief: every child deserves quality education. EIDU was born from our passion for making this belief a reality. Today, we are proud to see the positive impact that our product has for governments across the globe, reaching thousands of learners, teachers and civil servants daily

-
2015
- EIDU was founded by German tech entrepreneur Bernd Roggendorf in Nairobi, Kenya
- Roggendorf built software that allowed children to learn basic numeracy, and tested it directly with users
- The focus was on children and the software was school based. Initially, it was implemented in low-cost private schools
-
2016
- The software worked with just one smartphone per class, making it an extremely cost-effective solution
-
2017
- The first county government in Kenya partnered with EIDU. Together, we deployed the first pilot
- At this early stage, the primary focus was on further increasing scalability, usage and cost-efficiency
-
2018
- A switch was made: content on the platform was no longer made by EIDU, but sourced from expert third-party providers
- An inter-app interface was developed in order to integrate third-party content
-
2019
- The comprehensive EIDU model was developed. The platform now supported all stakeholders, from students, to parents, to teachers, to teacher trainers, all the way up to the ministry of education
-
2020
- The role of “field staff” was introduced to EIDU – staff who ensured high retention and, in the long run, would go on to provide pedagogical training in line with EIDU’s structured pedagogy approach
- Unsupervised standardised testing was incorporated into the platform. This allowed for learning-optimised personalisation for every student as well as instantaneous assessment of effectiveness. The testing enabled the platform to test its own impact and act immediately on the result, acting as an "inbuilt, rapid RCT"
- EIDU’s goal was defined: to enhance nationwide education systems and to offer the highest impact on learning per dollar of investment, globally
-
2021
- Built open software development kits for content and personalisation
- The structured pedagogy, Tayari, was incorporated – the four year program that supports governments to improve early years education
- Completely switch to public partnerships
-
2022
- Through further partnerships with Kenyan county governments, EIDU’s reach expanded to 225,000 children
-
2023
-
2024
- Pilots were launched in Pakistan and Nigeria
- Efforts to completely open sourcing the EIDU platform started
- EIDU was evaluated by an independent RCT, endline results are expected to be released by end of 2024
